  • Not the Big Apple: If you want to live in the middle of a megacity, you may want to reconsider New Jersey. You’ll need to weigh the cost of commuting as well.
  • High taxes: Holding the title of highest property taxes in the United States, it currently has the highest overall tax burden of any other state.
  • Weather: Most residents complain that it is either too cold or too hot here. Along with high humidity and less sunny days, winter can be intolerable in the northern region.
  • Crime: This is a generalization, but the state is home to two urban areas among the Top 20 most dangerous cities: Camden and Newark.
  • Traffic: You’ll, unfortunately, have to travel on some of the worst roads in the nation (along with one of the worst bottlenecks due to commuting).
  • Bizarre laws: As with most other states, New Jersey has its fair share of weird laws. For example, you can’t frown in Bernards Township. Also, pickles aren’t allowed in Trent on Sundays.

How to Become a New Jersey Resident

To participate in various community activities (along with working in the public sector), you’ll need to become an official resident of New Jersey. 

Residency involves moving to the state and establishing domicile (buying or renting a place). There are several things that can help prove your residency: 1) Getting a New Jersey driver’s license 2) Titling and registering your vehicle in the state 3) Registering to vote in NJ 4) Obtaining a mailing address. In-state tuition and divorce require 12 months of residency.

Moving to New Jersey DMV

Acquiring a new driver’s license:

After moving to the state, a new resident has 60 days to transfer an out-of-state driver’s license.

Steps to obtaining a new license:

  1. Move to the state of New Jersey
  2. Visit a motor vehicle agency
  3. Provide valid license and six points of ID
  4. Purchase a transfer permit
  5. Driving tests are waived if the license isn’t expired
  6. All CDL holders must pass the eye test
  7. Have a photo taken (full-face capture is required)
  8. Surrender current out-of-state driver’s license
  9. Receive four-year New Jersey driver’s license

Vehicle registration:

New residents of New Jersey must transfer register and registration of a vehicle within 60 days. To do so: 1) Visit a motor vehicle agency (see link in the section above) 2) Provide proof of ID, current title, and insurance. 3) If financing or leasing, complete application to release title. 4) Fill out Application for Certificate of Ownership 5) Pay applicable title and register fees.

To qualify to vote, you must be:

  1. A United States citizen
  2. A legal New Jersey State resident
  3. A resident of the county for at least 30 days
  4. 18 years or older on election day
  5. Not serving felony sentence, probation or parole 

New Jersey currently does not permit online voter registration. To register, mail or physically deliver your completed Voter Registration Application and / or Party Affiliation Form to your precinct’s County Commissioner of Registration or Superintendent of Elections

The voter registration deadline is 21 days before election day. New Jersey allows no-excuse early voting, and absentee voting is available to all voters.

As we make our way to South Jersey, we land in Haddonfield. This borough of fewer than 12,000 ranks as the #1 place to live in Camden County (and considered by many as the best town to live in the state). The majority of residents (85%) are homeowners, and the public schools serving the area are fantastic.

As a suburb of Philadelphia, Haddonfield offers a thirty-minute commute across the Delaware River to the City of Brotherly Love. It is also a welcoming and close-knit community.
